What is foster care?
  • A temporary refuge for an Australian Shepherd who needs a new home.

  • A place for a dog to become better socialized, learn house manners and basic obedience skills, and obtain medical attention as needed.

  • A period of time to evaluate a dog's temperament for placement.

Who pays for foster care?

  • Medical expenses are covered by ARPH (with prior approval)

  • Food, toys and mileage are not reimbursed. Check with your tax advisor about deducting mileage as a charitable expense.

How long does a dog stay in foster care?

  • Anywhere from a week to a couple of months.  In rare cases, more time is needed.

What if the foster dog doesn’t fit in?

  • Your rescue representative will help you sort out any issues during the adjustment period and, if necessary, find the dog another foster home.

What kind of support is available?

  • An email list full of people who have been rescuing Aussies for a long time.
  • Your Rescue Representative is just a phone call or email away.

How are you able to let them go after you’ve loved and fallen in love with them?

“Many people tell me “I could never do this. I couldn’t let go.“  Well, it is hard at times, very hard. There are many bittersweet adoptions. It’s all worth it though, when you get that first note from the adoptive family, the one that says “Thank you for bringing this dog to us,” the one with the picture of the dog sitting with his new family, blissfully happy. You know the photo that reminds you of how your dogs fill your life and you know you not only helped the dog find a home but added to a human’s happiness as well. That really makes you feel good. It makes it all worth the work, the hours and the emotions.”

Donna Riley-Sweet, ARPH Foster Home and NJ Representative

“It is very hard to let them go, but if I don't there is not room for another.  It is hard emotionally, I have cried when every one of them have left my home, but I also feel very good about what I have given the dog, and the manners and socialization my home provides.”

 Beverly McWhirter, Foster Mom, WV

How does fostering enrich your life?

“I consider myself a steppingstone in the life of the dogs I help and each dog that passes though my door is a steppingstone in my life as well.   I have learned valuable life lessons from these animals.  I have learned about love, about being able to let go.  I have learned about honesty and trust.   I have learned a lot about team work and what a group of determined and focused people can accomplish even when they are from all walks of life if they pull together for one common cause the results can be amazing. I have learned about overcoming disabilities. I can truly appreciate the importance of patience now more then ever.  I have gained knowledge about the Australian Shepherd breed that no textbook could have captured.”
